A few bits and bobs from off the beaten track that have been regulars on the turntable/disc player/hard drive etc this year. Would be good to know what everyone else has been listening to.. The Stepbrothers- Separated at Birth Like they've just popped up from a musical Bermuda Triangle whose three points were Sandinista era Clash, Magazine and PIL. germanshepherdrecords.bandcamp.com/album/switched-at-birthViolet Woods- Violet Woods Byrdsian jangle with an undercurrent of 60's psychedelia. violetwoods.bandcamp.com/Northern Arms- Northern Arms Dark gospel/soul/americana. Spiritualised meets Arcade Fire without the annoying bits. northernarms.bandcamp.com/Ashley Reaks- Compassion Fatigue 1-8 Sounds awful in that its an lp were the first song is 1 min, the second 2 mins, third is 3 mins etc. Proggy in places as well. But weirdly addictive and unsettling. He released another lp this year called This is Planet Grot that is full on punk with Bollocks like riffing. Probably wore a cape while recording it. ashleyreaks.bandcamp.com/album/compassion-fatigue-1-8ashleyreaks.bandcamp.com/album/this-is-planet-grotThere's more- KP2 compilation called Cabinet of Curiosities, The Road to Billinge Hill by West Coast Sick Line, The Bastards of Fate, Jane Weaver, Horse Party blah blah blah.

Hello Smelly FP
Thanks for the list. Sorry I thought someone would have replied to you earlier. And, yeah, to be honest, I should have replied to you earlier. I was just going to post a list of my likes this year but I didn't think that would have been fair. It's been a bit hectic (time of year 'n' all) so haven't really had chance to listen to your recommendations and didn't want to add my thoughts until I had. I listened to some of the tracks on your suggested albums last night and am listening to Ashley Reaks now (I wish he hadn't done that song 1 - 1 minute, etc) and think they are all interesting in very different ways. I'm going to listen to a bit more of each and let them embed themselves before saying what I think but the Step Brother which I've listened to most gets better - and more varied - keeping the spirit of The Pop Group, Pere Ubu and Cabaret Voltaire alive but with hints of jazz and dub so exactly like you say a Sandinista for the 2010s. Cheers again for the pointer to these. I notice two of these albums are on Spotify but don't think I'd have been firected towards them without your post. Thanks.

Is this thing still on? Well Himself asked me for my 5 favourite gigs of 2014, seeing as I'm a bit of a gigslag.
5) Counting Coins & Popes Of Chillitown at Adelphi - sweaty monging with lots of sweaty mongs.
4) Endoflevelbaddie on the Friday night of Freedom Festival - proper old skool vibe, had me raving like an 18 year old.
3) The entire Sunday line up at Freedom Festival - warm day, great bands, great company and soup chucking.
2) TNS Records all dayer at Fruit - 10 bands, absolutely jumping, Counting Coins headlining but even they were outshone by a band called Faintest Idea, who are definitely worth checking out.
1) The Talks album launch at Welly - my favourite local band absolutely nailed it, with support from Breeze, Bud Sugar and Counting Coins. Incidentally the album is my record of 2014.
Plenty of gigs to watch this year, Charlatans in March, AC/DC in July, Freedom Festival in the middle of 2 weeks off work and many others. See you in the mosh pit.

Thanks Thomas,
We knew we could rely on you to be quick of the mark. They sound great gigs (Think I was at one of 'em!) and as you're at events than I've had cold beers you should know what was good last year although I reckon there might be a couple of things you've been to that you might not remember too well. Let's see whether anyone else agrees or has other examples to share.

Can I nominate 3 music books from last year?
1) VIV ALBERTINE "Clothes, Clothes, Clothes: Music, Music, Music; Boys, Boys, Boys." Best autobiography I’ve read for ages: brutal, honest, disturbing but often entertainingly scandalous
2) SIMON GODDARD "Simply Thrilled : The Preposterous Story of Postcard Records" Could well be the testament for all of Post-Punk
3) DANNY BAKER "Going Off Alarming: The Autobiography (Volume 2)" Not purely musical and not as good a volume 1 but funny and full of tall tales that may or not be true but which are always captivating and make for great anecdotes
