...was fundamentally different to music here in the UK at the time....much more dance orientated. Bands like James White & The Blacks, Mars, Suicide, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks and these lot, Liquid Liquid.

So whaddya reckon to this New York stuff then, Rich? I think its bloody great Rich. Have you heard Pylon? They weren't from New York but this stuff kinda leads to them I think. REM did a cover of this on an early b-side. Really? I didn't know that.

Now then, Jack. Utterly love Piss Factory, First heard it on that New Wave compilation I think. It's kinda punk poetry set to modern jazz piano and guitar. A wonderful thing.

But was it punk or post punk? Or something else? It pre-dates it all really, being from 1975 I think.

This stuff is new to my ears, for New York post punk to me is the fledgling house music scene, Paradise Garage etc. Of course, that in turn influenced Messrs Wilson and Gretton into building the Hacienda, so it's all relative I guess.

You can hear a lot of early house in Liquid Liquid then Tom, yeah? Obvz the bass line was pinched for White Lines. I don't know a whole heap about some of this myself as back then I kinda poo poo'd a lot of US music once it got past Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads etc. But in last 10 years or so I've dug some of it out again and it's bloody good. So I guess what I'm saying is I am now poo pooing the poo poo.

"Whole regiment entirely destroyed. By poo poo!"
Yeah, a definite back-in-the-day feel to that track. It's the kind of thing I'd probably give a spin in a guest slot :-D

Can I just say that the 'There's always been a dance element to our music' era opened my eyes fully to non rock music. The New York scene of the early to mid 80's was certainly a massive part of that and just chimed so well with what was happening in the Uk with ACR etc. So much so that I think Simon Topping recorded with LIquid Liquid for a while.
The Ze label was important in all that and was pure (Maximum) joy after punk and then gloomy post punk. The Mutant Disco albums are still as vivid and vibrant today as they were thirty years ago despite all the changes in club music.
We've played both versions of Contort Yourself at RJ. Unfortunately, neither went down too well. But Ze was a brilliant label from Dr Savannah to Cristina and 'Me No Pop I' is possible my favourite dance track of all time but Rich won't like it because he doesn't like Kid Creole and the coconuts.

No, never a big fan of Kid Creole, but a lot of the stuff linked to it is good so...maybe...I...should...reconsider...aaagghh!
